Southeast BIO Plan Competition, in Partnership with HIG Ventures

Southeast BIO (SEBIO) presents the annual BIO/Plan Competition. This year-long program has been designed and developed to help foster the creation of new, venture-attractive life science companies based in the Southeast. Working closely with tech transfer offices and entrepreneurs throughout the region, the competition seeks out and pulls forward opportunities from our region's research universities, research centers and existing entrepreneurs.

The 2007 winner, Triptcor Pharmaceuticals from Emory University, received an unprecedented level of interest from the venture community following their selection and is now well positioned to launch the enterprise with significant backing. Other participants in the program report similar interest from the investment community and express confidence going forward as they now possess a fully-vetted, professionally-developed business strategy and accompanying written plan. Future participants can expect even greater interest in their opportunity as the BIO/Plan Competition is now recognized as one of the premier venture development programs in the Southeast.

Here is how it works...

  1. The principal investigator/entrepreneur completes a short application outlining their concept and the associated opportunity in broad terms.
  2. A selection committee chooses the best ideas and pairs each with a team of seasoned professionals who will serve as mentors to the principals.  The group's goal will be to further develop the concept and surround it with a first-class business plan.
  3. Following a period of 5 to 6 months of intimate engagement with the assigned mentoring team, a finished business plan will be submitted by the principals to a panel of experts and a small group of finalists will be selected.  These finalists will present their opportunity to the broader life science investment community at the annual SEBIO Investor Forum held each fall.
  4. The winner of the BIO/Plan Competition will be selected at this Conference and will be awarded unrestricted, non-dilutive venture funds to launch the enterprise and implement their business plan.
