Application and Selection Process

The application process will begin in February and run through mid-March.  A short application can be accessed directly through this web site.  The Selection Process will unfold as follows:

  • Immediately following the close of the Application Period, the Phase I Selection Committee will examine the full basket of applications for appropriateness for the BIO/Plan Competition.  Factors such as the following will be considered:
    • opportunity/concept falls within the life science sector, as defined above;
    • correct stage of development;
    • technology/opportunity will serve as the basis for the formation of a free-standing corporate entity, as opposed to being better suited to a licensing deal; and,
    • the basic credentials of the applicants relative to the goals of the BIO/Plan Competition (primarily, the formation and promotion of new, venture-attractive enterprises) are demonstrated.
  • The goal at this stage will be to pare down the initial volume of applicants to a manageable number, a final pool of 25 to 30 candidates is considered ideal.
  • The final pool will be presented to the formal panel of experts, the (Phase II) BIO/Plan Competition Selection Committee.  This Selection Committee will review the applications in greater detail and select the final 8 to 10 applicants who will be admitted into the BIO/Plan Competition as Emerging Opportunities.  This process should be completed by the first of April.

All applicants will be notified immediately of the selection results and those Emerging Opportunities that are selected to compete will be given further instructions regarding their continuing participation in the BIO/Plan Competition, including the contact information for their assigned Mentors as the mentoring process will commence immediately.

Applications for the 2008 competition are no longer being accepted.
