Prior to founding Hutchison Law Group in 1996, Fred was a partner at Petree Stockton & Robinson (now Kilpatrick Stockton) and Moore & Van Allen. Fred spent five years practicing in the municipal finance, securities and bank regulatory areas with Covington & Burling in Washington, D.C.

Fred's outstanding leadership and unstinting support of clients is the key to Hutchison Law Group's bedrock philosophy. He has believed from his career's beginning that attorneys owe more to clients than conventional legal counsel. Fred has helped make HLG synonymous with innovation and growth among hundreds of business clients around the Southeast. He has done so by leading the way to real partnerships with our clients, creating and nurturing the networks that ensure success.

His practice is focused on venture capital, securities and mergers and acquisitions. He enjoys counseling clients, both from the legal aspects, but also on business issues involved in starting and growing companies.

Fred has represented more than 200 entrepreneurial companies over the years and has worked with some of the Triangle's leading technology companies, including Integrated Silicon Systems, Cree Research, Trimeris, SciQuest, Ganymede, Accipiter, OpenSite Technologies and Icagen. Fred has also been an active angel investor within the Research Triangle area over the last 20 years and was instrumental in the enactment and subsequent renewals of the Qualified Business Venture Tax Credit for North Carolina investors.

Fred has served as a general partner in Research Triangle Ventures, a $10.3 million early stage venture capital fund focused on companies in the Research Triangle Park region of North Carolina. These investment activities, along with many years as a private angel investor, better equip Fred to advise clients on raising capital.

Fred was the founding President of the Council for Entrepreneurial Development, the largest entrepreneurial support organization in the country. He has also served as the Chairman of the Greater Raleigh Chamber of Commerce, the Chairman of the Business Innovation Technology Advancement Center (an incubator for early stage companies) and as founding Chairman of The Sports Council in Raleigh.

Most recently he has served as the Chairman of the Triangle Community Foundation and Co-Chairman of the Entrepreneurial Advisory Committee for the Catalyst Project, whose goal is to increase the level of permanent philanthropic giving within the community.

Fred has been recognized as one of the Best Lawyers in America. He is regularly recognized by Business North Carolina as one of the best corporate lawyers in the State. Electronic Business magazine recognized him in 1990 as one of the top 10 technology lawyers in the country.

Fred earned a B.S. in Business Administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1971 and his law degree from the University of Virginia in 1975.

Fred is currently serving as the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the North Carolina Technology Development Authority, a nonprofit organization which operates the First Flight incubator in the Research Triangle Park.
